Female Fridays
“Mommy, why is there a man sleeping on our back deck?” asked my oldest daughter. “That’s actually a funny one!” I said, dismissing her as I unpacked the groceries. “No, seriously, there is a man on our back deck!” I looked out and there sat a very scary looking man, fast asleep in my deck chair. I immediately called 911, set the house alarm, and snapped a few pictures of him with my camera. Almost two weeks had gone by since my husband left on a military deployment. He is in the Reserves, so we were completely blind-sided by his [...]

She talked fast, enthusiastic smile lighting up her features, stars dancing in those green eyes: “This summer I’m headed to Africa to dig wells then interning at a school for the blind. It’s a lot with marathon training and getting my masters, but you know what they say, ‘Always Dream Big!’“ I just stared at her. This was the Joan of Arc of dreaming. And there I was, just a few minutes earlier, thrilled I had gotten the popsicle stain out of my son’s favorite shirt. She took a sip of her skinny, half-caf, soy Machiato and asked the question [...]

Was I really going to do this? Click “send” and wait for their responses that were sure to cut me to the core? Before panic overtook, I mashed the enter key and away flew one of the toughest emails I’d ever written. I used to be comfortable living with my head in a hole, ostrich-style. Super-sensitive, unreceptive, and overly emotional to any words not saturated with positivity and encouragement. Not much, if any, growth can thrive in that kind of truth-depraved environment. Until college brought a really great roommate, some enlightening psych courses, and eventually a husband did I begin [...]

A girl can find a lot of reasons to lose weight. My particular motivation of choice is a genuine, Texas-proud, rodeo-loving pair of boots. As soon as I can fit my calves into a pair, those babies are mine. I think that, silly though it may be, that’s a good reason. It’s tangible. It’s practical (I live in Texas, after all). It’s healthy. And don’t we know that not all reasons are? Healthy, that is. I remember hearing in high school: “If you’d just lose 50 pounds, no one would be able to hold a candle to how beautiful you’d be.” [...]

Mankind, was incredibly, created in the image of God and the Trinity has known the ultimate intimacy from the beginning of time. In 2012 I read the Bible through for the first time. What made it more meaningful was as I read through each book of the Bible I also read a chapter of the book Sixty Six Love Letters by Larry Crabb. Reading with the focus that each book was a love letter from God, I could see the woven imagery of His deep affection for us. I discovered the only word written in the Bible more then love [...]

This post is a follow up to Cassidy’s post: 50 Shades of Lust. It started at such a young age when a (hear me) HEALTHY thing like make believe came into our lives. Already my 2 1/2 year old is obsessed with being a princess. Literally she wears a princess dress and heels every where we go. And there is nothing wrong with this. But it’s when we first became hooked to “happily ever after.” But this fairytale fantasy continues into our teenage years as we enter into the world of chick flicks. Again, not necessarily a bad thing. Until [...]

E.L. James’ recent erotic novel, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is strong evidence that women are longing more than ever for something steamier than they’ve got. The author herself described it as “romantic fantasy” which offer women a “holiday from their husbands, “ …and it’s flying off the shelves. We feel almost entitled to our escape from our mundane. It’s acceptable. It’s exciting to enter into someone else’s life and read explicitly about their sagas that will never be our reality. I mean, why else would we flock to the Bellas, Sookies, and Cinderellas? They’ve all got amazing Prince Charmings…or [...]

She barked out the names of the products she wanted. I asked if there was anything else she needed. She said she would walk around the cosmetic department to pick up other items. I stepped out from behind my counter to assist her and she snapped, “…and I don’t need you following me around like a lost puppy dog!” The year was 2000, and I was working in cosmetics at an upscale department store in Beverly Hills. I had helped my fair share of snotty customers, but this one was by far my RUDEST CUSTOMER EVER! She dumped her armful [...]

I am a slow burn. My family of origin had a very firm, but unspoken rule: don’t show anger. I literally can not remember more than one time when either of my parents unleashed anger in a public manner. So, I learned to do a slow burn, meaning I smiled sweetly on the outside, while my stomach churned on the inside and my face went from pink to fire-red. In other words, I wasn’t allowed – no, rather it was expected that in the event I might get “all worked up” over something, there was actually no place to [...]

I plan a pity-party just about as often as a wildebeest schedules a dip in some quicksand. Never. Yet surprisingly, I often find myself panicking and up to my armpits in self-pity with no idea how I got there. But honestly, it actually feels kind of nice once I get past the reason I wound up in the pit to begin with (someone didn’t appreciate me, having a hurtful confrontation, slamming on 5 lbs). I feel warm, soothed, nurtured…even as I’m being sucked down inch by immobilizing inch. Poor Cassidy. You’re so undervalued and misunderstood. I get it, though, even [...]
