“Let go and let God”
That’s what they say
How many times have I heard this?
And thought
Sounds good
But how?
Because I tried to let go
Of my pain and my worries
Like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz
I closed my eyes tight
Clicked my heels together 3 times
And woke up
To the same life I was living before
My husband was still gone
The babies were still crying
And I was still alone
What am I doing wrong?
Why doesn’t this work for me?
“Come to me all you who are weary and heavy burdened
There it was
In print
Was this promise just not for me??
To my surprise I discovered
That “letting go” is not a passive act
I had thought for way too long
That if I closed my eyes and wished upon a star
I might find myself whisked away
To a carefree existence
Free of my current problems
In the “rest” Jesus had promised me
But letting go of your problems
Is not like throwing a penny in the fountain
And hoping you get your wish
When you hand something to Jesus
He hands you something back
A daily prescription
But you have to take it
15 minutes
Just talking to Him
A few minutes reading His Word
Or listening to it if you prefer
Downloaded like a tablespoon of medicine you need
To get you through the day
Mulling it over in your mind
Whatever you read
And asking Him to show you
What He wants you to learn
Try some music that speaks of His character
His personality traits
Reminding you daily of His love for you
At first it might feel pointless
A waste of time
Like nothing is making a difference
But have you ever been sick?
Did you feel better as soon as you took the antibiotics?
Or did it take some time?
Letting go isn’t passive
You give Him your issues
And he gives you the tools
But take them
Pursue it
Like weight loss
The pounds won’t fall off
Because you wished upon a star
It happens
When you use the tools you’re given
Commitment to the cause
Don’t get me wrong
Jesus has the power
He doesn’t need our help to make miracles happen
But what He yearns for
Is a relationship
He wants you to know Him
He’s given you the tools
To pursue Him
So try it
Because one day
I woke up
To a husband who was still gone
And babies who were still crying
But there
In the midst of the craziness
I had found the peace
That passes all understanding (Phillipians 4:7)
So pursue Him (Jeremiah 29:13)
He’s worth it
